The advert is a starting point. Ask what the records support, what the seller can prove and what is still unresolved.
No account or payment needed. Use this on your phone, print it or share it with someone buying a car.
1. Check the car’s identity
Ask for the registration and compare the make, model and colour with DVLA information. At the viewing, see the original V5C and match the VIN on the car to the document. The registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner.
Ask: “Can I see the original V5C and check the VIN when I view the car?”
2. Read the MOT history
Look at recorded mileage, failures and advisories over time. A later pass does not by itself prove exactly which repairs were completed. An MOT is not a full mechanical inspection.
Ask: “What work was done after these advisories, and are there invoices?”
3. Test the advert’s claims
“Full service history”, “one owner” and “all work done” need supporting evidence. Compare service dates and mileage; distinguish previous registered keepers from owners.
Ask: “Can you show the service records and paperwork supporting those claims?”
4. Resolve history concerns
Free MOT and DVLA records do not establish finance, theft or insurance write-off status. Obtain an appropriate licensed history check separately. Missing information means unresolved, not clear.
Ask: “Is there outstanding finance or a write-off history? What evidence supports your answer?”
5. Inspect and test-drive
See the car in person, check its condition and arrange a properly insured test-drive. For concerns about mechanical condition, consider an independent professional inspection.
Ask: “Can I arrange an inspection and an insured test-drive before deciding?”
6. Agree the deposit terms
Before paying, verify who you are dealing with and get the amount, purpose and refund conditions in writing. Do not assume a deposit is refundable. Pause if evidence is missing or you feel pressured.
Ask: “What happens to my deposit if the history check or inspection reveals a problem?”
Help shape KELNU
Would a plain-English report help?
KELNU is developing reports that separate advert claims → recorded facts → seller questions → evidence still needed.
The report below is fictional: INCOMPLETE · SAMPLE. Live paid checks and ordering are not available.
Survey: UK adults aged 18+ buying, or helping someone buy, a used car within three months. No contact details or real vehicle information requested.
